YANTRA FOR TIIPOI (2023)

YANTRA is a collection of kitchen-related textiles, including napkins, tea towels, and oven mitts, created in collaboration with London-based design studio Tiipoi.

YANTRAS, which can be literally translated as 'machines' or 'contraptions,' are intricate mystical diagrams. They are compositions of geometrical shapes that carry symbolic meanings. These drawings are believed to bring auspicious benefits as they play a crucial role in meditative rituals within Jain, Buddhist, and Tantric traditions. Our collection draws particular inspiration from one such set of yantras characterized by squares inscribed with Sanskrit syllables.

Employing this geometrical visual language, patterns of interconnected squares form the foundation of the collection utilizing a larger format to create Tetris-like blocks on the napkins and mitts. The napkins introduce an additional layer of intrigue, with each one being a unique YANTRA in itself, and graphic details are meticulously screen-printed over a backdrop of coloured squares.

Tiipoi has produced this collection in collaboration with the Bangalore-based screenprinters Navrang, run by brothers Shamir and Waseem for over 25 years. Located near the bustling city market, close to Shivjinajar, the brothers have gained recognition for welcoming emerging artists, young textile designers, and anyone interested in spending a day printing or dyeing using traditional methods.

For London Design Festival 2023, Tiipoi produced an exclusive colourway for Liberty London which is available both in-store and online. Read more about it here.
